Justice Kavuma Visits Nakivale Refugee Camp Ahead of High Court Criminal Session

The Head of MbararaHigh Court Circuit, Lady Justice Joyce Kavuma on Tuesday June 4, 2024 visitedNakivale Refugee Settlement Camp ahead of a High Court Criminal Session where25 cases are going to be handled.

At the Camp, the Judgechaired a meeting of justice actors to discuss issues of improving access tojustice for refugees.

Lady Justice Kavumainformed the members that the Session which will kick off next week onWednesday will handle 11 Murder, 11 Aggravated Defilement and three AggravatedRobbery cases.

During theinteraction, the members committed to strengthen the links and also lobby formore sessions for refugees and the host community.

The Nakivale CampCommandant and his team expressed concerns on challenges facing in tracing andbringing witnesses to court. 

This, was attributedto the vast area covered by the Camp, high crime rate, Rehabilitating andresettlement of convicts into the camp after they have served their sentencesamong others.

The meeting wasattended by among others; Mbarara Deputy Registrar, HW Zulaika Nanteza, HWPatric Bamuhiga (Chief Magistrate Isingiro), representatives from the Office ofthe Prime Minister, the United Nations Refugee Agency, Alight NGO, Officer inCharge of Nakivale Police Station and Isingiro Resident State Attorney.

On the sidelines ofthe meeting, Justice Kavuma visited Kabazana Women Center, a home of anex-convict and Kishojwa police station all within the settlement.
